# NSDR vs. Yoga Nidra: Differences and Which Practice to Try

NSDR and yoga nidra overlap in everyday use, but their names do not identify identical practices. NSDR is a broad label for waking rest; yoga nidra has distinct teaching traditions. To choose, read the actual instructions: try a simple rest guide if you want fewer prompts, or a structured sequence if you prefer more guidance.

## How to choose a practice

1. **Decide what kind of pause you want.** You might prefer one steady anchor, or a guide that moves through several stages. There is no need to reach a special state.
2. **Preview the instructions.** Check for body attention, imagery, intentions, and breathing cues. Skip prompts you do not want to follow.
3. **Choose a manageable length.** Our [NSDR page](/sleep/nsdr) offers 10-minute audio. Our [yoga nidra page](/sleep/yoga-nidra) offers 10- and 20-minute versions. Both include written options.
4. **Rest somewhere supported.** Sit or lie down where you can pause safely. Eyes can stay open, and movement is allowed.
5. **Stop or switch when you want.** You do not have to finish a recording or compare both practices in one sitting. Return attention to your actual room before resuming your day.

The recordings linked here use AI-generated voices reading original Breath Harbor scripts. They are not the recordings used in the studies below. For a timed pause without a spoken guide, the [meditation timer](/tools/meditation-timer) is another option. Find more choices in the [sleep and rest guide](/sleep).

## NSDR and yoga nidra side by side

This table compares how our existing pages use the terms. Other teachers and recordings may use different instructions.

| Question | NSDR on this site | Yoga nidra on this site |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What does the name mean? | Non-sleep deep rest, a broad label for a guided waking pause | A practice with yoga teaching traditions and varied modern forms |
| What do I follow? | Supported rest, a contact point or sound, and natural breathing | Settling, an optional intention, attention around the body, breath awareness, optional images, and return |
| Do I need breath control? | No | No; our guide uses natural breathing |
| What audio is available? | 10 minutes | 10 or 20 minutes |
| Can I adapt it? | Use an external sound, keep eyes open, or stop | Skip body areas, images, or intention-setting; keep eyes open or stop |
| Does it replace sleep? | Do not count it as equivalent sleep | Do not count it as equivalent sleep |

The difference here is mainly the guidance you follow. One label does not establish that a recording is deeper, more restorative, or medically better for you. A simple script can contain body awareness, and a yoga nidra recording can be adapted; the categories are not strict opposites.

## Why the labels need care

A 2013 review of yoga nidra definitions highlighted differences between traditional accounts and the relaxation or imagery exercises used in empirical studies. A name alone is therefore not enough to identify what researchers tested.

When a study reports yoga nidra results, look for its recording, practice schedule, participants, and comparison group. Do not relabel the findings as evidence for every NSDR exercise. Our two guides are original practices, and neither has been tested against the other for clinical outcomes.

## When to use it

Choose either as an optional pause during the day or an evening wind-down, when you can safely set responsibilities aside. If you are sleepy and have the opportunity to sleep, you do not need to keep yourself awake to complete a rest exercise.

For a bedtime story-like setting rather than a body sequence, try [guided imagery for sleep](/scripts/guided-imagery). For looking outward rather than following inward prompts, choose the [grounding guide](/grounding). These are choices based on format and preference, not a ranking of effectiveness.

## Who should be careful

Stop if you feel dizzy, lightheaded, overwhelmed, more disconnected, or distressed. Open your eyes if closed and notice the room. You can change position, leave out imagery, or choose a sound outside your body. Do not practice while driving, operating equipment, or doing anything that needs your attention.

Neither linked recording requires deep breaths or breath holds. Do not add them to make a practice feel more intense. If inward attention repeatedly brings up difficult memories, panic, or dissociation, seek support from a doctor or mental health professional about suitable adaptations.

Persistent sleep difficulty or severe daytime sleepiness deserves medical assessment. Do not delay care while comparing recordings. These pages provide general wellbeing information and have not been individually clinically reviewed.

## What the research says

A 2025 randomized trial compared 11- and 30-minute online yoga nidra recordings with music and a waiting list over two months. It reported small effects on some outcomes and comparisons. That study did not compare our NSDR and yoga nidra recordings, and its findings cannot establish which of our guides you should choose.

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of yoga nidra for sleep included five unique studies across its pooled analyses. The randomized-trial analyses did not find statistically significant improvements in sleep quality or insomnia severity; the authors rated the evidence as very low certainty. Small samples, risk of bias, and differences between studies limit confidence.

NCCIH's sleep guidance identifies cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, or CBT-I, as the most strongly recommended treatment for chronic insomnia. Choosing a rest recording is a different task from choosing care for a sleep disorder. Claims that a few minutes of either practice replace hours of sleep are not established by the sources here.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is yoga nidra a kind of NSDR?

People sometimes group yoga nidra under the broad NSDR label. That does not make every NSDR script yoga nidra, or make different recordings equivalent research interventions. Read the instructions rather than relying on the label.

### Which should I try first?

On this site, choose NSDR if you want fewer kinds of prompts, or yoga nidra if you want a staged body-awareness sequence. Preview either written guide first. This is a format preference, not a medical recommendation.

### Is 20 minutes better than 10?

We have not tested the two durations against each other. Choose a length that fits your time and comfort, and stop earlier if you want. Research on other recordings cannot establish that our longer track is better.

### What if I fall asleep?

You do not need to finish the instructions or restart the audio. If you often struggle to stay awake during the day, discuss that with a clinician rather than relying on rest exercises to compensate.
